Worst you have ever been in terms of illness? (Today's morbid thread)
Following on from the NHS thread what is the worst you have ever been in terms of being ill? Have you ever come close to death? Have you ever been so ill you felt you were about to die?

Twice for me.

2001- kidney stones. Waves of extreme pain in stomach and knob when I pissed, traces of blood, literally rolling on floor sweating. Managed to pass the stone/crystals after 2 days but thought my time was up - how I did not pass out I do not know

2009 - simple tooth abcess. Dentist, antibiotics, pain got worse and wasn't clearing up. A few days later swelling all over my face, eye closing, extreme pain and swelling and sickness. Rushed to A&E - admitted that night on IV antibiotics, next morning surger under GA to remove abcess and tooth. Surgeon said 1-2 days later I would have lost my eye and also probably had a brain injury/damage if it went up further.

You cunts?

Had both of those. Kidney stones are excruciatingly painful, as is a tooth abscess.

Worst for me was a bout of chikungunya, a virus spread by mosquitoes. Never, ever had a headache like that and never want to again. And 105 degrees fever. Indescribably nasty.

Had Stones and couple of tooth abcesses.... both 2nd division for me compared to a blocked bladder (by a country mile most painful thing I have had) and shoving white horse oils on your 'arris... broke bones, slipped discs all pale into significance... probably nearest been to death was a burst doudenal ulcer when I was 17... chucked up a pint and half before they got me to hospital...

I had a ruptured disc for 2 years; everything that went with that (sciatica, muscle atrophy) was little to no fun, since I couldn't walk 100. yards without excruciating pain down my left leg.

3 years ago i had a staph infection in my foot that required 3 operations to clean out. Very little pain, but apparently if I'd left it another 2 days to go to the hospital my foot would have needed to be amputated, because the infection was starting to move towards my ankle.

1989 - Burst appendix. Was rushed into Harold Wood hospital on the Saturday night, didn't come round until the Thursday in intensive care.

I was 17 and must have been horrendous for my parents watching me go through that. Fortunately I have zero memories of it, no pain, no nothing. Luckily I collapsed at home and mum and dad where there, If i'd been on my own I would have been dead in a couple of hours.

Long time ago, but will never forget it, got up for an eyelash about 3am, didn't bother with the light as didn't want to wake anyone, I'm caring like that, then trod on an upturned electric fan plug someone had left out getting to the John, can't begin to describe the pain but Mrs Riddle said the howls woke the whole street!

Touch wood never been that ill at 52, so must be doing something right?
I have broken my wrist and torn ankle ligaments but the worst pain was a toss up between a dislocated shoulder and extreme stomach cramps from IBS type symptoms. Both were unbearably painful.

Try dislocated shoulder that I couldn't put back in myself too.
And yes they were that bad, probably more bearable than the shoulder though. Severe iBS cramps and trapped wind have been described as equally as painful as. Childbirth.

Can't compete with most of you lot but had a bout of pleurisy about 10 years ago, which is an inflammation of the lining of the lung. It was on the left lung and at first I thought there was something major wrong with my heart. Extremely painful for a few days, unbearably excruciating if I tried to get anything close to horizontal, so I had to try to sleep propped up in a chair. Sorted by good old antibiotics in the end.
